Special screening of "The Brides" and panel discussion to honor one of Greek cinema's most influential directors
The Greek Community of Toronto is thrilled to announce its participation in the 2026 Greek International Film Festival Tour of Canada (GIFFT) with a special Tribute to Pantelis Voulgaris, taking place on Wednesday, September 30th at the Papermill Theatre, 67 Pottery Road, Toronto, beginning 7:00 p.m.
About Pantelis Voulgaris
Pantelis Voulgaris is widely regarded as one of the foremost figures of New Greek Cinema, with a career spanning more than five decades. His 1972 film The Engagement of Anna is considered a defining work of the movement, earning top honors at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and recognition at festivals in Berlin and London. Over the years, Voulgaris built a body of work known for its exploration of history, memory, and the personal lives of ordinary people set against major historical and political backdrops — from Stone Years and Quiet Days in August to Little England, which won Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress at the Shanghai International Film Festival. His films have consistently bridged Greek cinema with international audiences, cementing his legacy as one of Greece's most celebrated directors.
The evening will be hosted by Georgia Balogiannis, who will introduce a screening of one of Voulgaris's most celebrated films, The Brides (Nyfes, 2004) — a moving story set in 1922, following a group of "mail-order" brides traveling by ship from Europe to America to marry men they have only ever known through photographs and letters. The film, supported internationally by Martin Scorsese, remains one of Voulgaris's most widely recognized works, exploring themes of migration, sacrifice, and love against a sweeping historical backdrop.
Following the screening, Georgia Balogiannis will lead an interactive panel discussion with the audience, exploring Voulgaris's lasting impact on European cinema and his role in shaping the language of modern Greek film.
