Hosts Flag Raising Ceremony to Commemorate Greek Independence Day

Toronto, ON, On March 24 2026, the Greek Community of Toronto proudly hosted a flag-raising ceremony at Toronto City Hall to commemorate the Greek Independence Day, marking the historic struggle that began in 1821. The ceremony brought together dignitaries, community members, and local leaders to honor the enduring legacy of Greece's fight for independence.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Mrs. Georgia Papaspyrou, Chief Operating Officer of the Greek Community of Toronto, who served as the Master of Ceremonies, setting an inviting tone for the celebration. The national anthems of Greece and Canada were beautifully performed by talented Anastasia Kakagiannis and Nick Syrmalis, filling the air with patriotic fervor as the Greek flag was raised, symbolizing pride and unity.

Notable attendees included His Grace Bishop Athenagoras, Consul General of Greece in Toronto loannis Chatzantonakis, and City Councillor Nick Mantas. In their addresses, Consul General Chatzantonakis, GCT President Betty Skoutakis, and Councillor Mantas reflected on the significance of Greek Independence Day, highlighting the historical and cultural importance of the day for Greeks both in Greece and abroad. The ceremony iso featured lively performances by GCT dance groups, showcasing traditional Greek dances that captivated th udience and underscored the rich cultural heritage of the Greek community in Toronto Following the ceremony, a reception hosted by Councillor Mantas and Consul General Chatzantonakis provided attendees with the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and celebrate their shared heritage.
