***UPDATE*** - Friday, October 3rd
We received updated information from the Cirque Du Soleil, which is in charge of the Opening Ceremonies, that youth ages 13-24 years of age can participate in the auditions instead of 14-24 years of age. All participants are required to be 14 year of age the during 2015 calendar year. Attached below is the registration form that is required to be completed by youth &/or parents to participate in today’s auditions.
The Greek Community of Toronto is honored and excited to be given the opportunity to have our youth audition for the chance to participate in the Opening Ceremonies of the 2015 Pan-Am Games to be hosted in Toronto next July 2015. The Cirque Du Soleil is in charge of the Opening Ceremonies, and they are arranging an audition for the GCT in a month's time. We are inviting talented, enthusiastic and exceptionally committed adolescents and young adults interested in this once in a lifetime opportunity to audition at St. John's Church, 1385 Warden Avenue, on Friday, October 3rd, 6:30 to 9:00p.m. Although there has been very little lead time to organize this audition, we hope there will be great interest for this phenomenal project. Please be aware that the performance piece will be the Hasapiko and, if we are selected to participate in the Opening Ceremonies, any and all participation will be on a purely volunteer basis.
On Friday October 3rd, all dancers interested in auditioning will participate in a Hasapiko workshop from 6:30-7:30p.m., followed by auditions from approximately 7:30-9:00p.m. The minimum age is fourteen (14) as of July 1st, 2015.
There will be two parts to the audition. Dancers will dance the presented choreography in groups and will also have the opportunity to free style to Greek music. They will be assessed based on the following judging criteria:
Timing points are determined by the ability of the dancer to dance on the down beat of the music, and to include syncopations that are also on the beats of the music. Musicality would be part of this.
"How Well You Do What You Do": we are looking for good footwork, balance, control, well-controlled arms and hands, frame and line, and how well turns and spins are executed.
The ability of the partners to work together as a team. One person should not be obviously "out dancing" the other/others unless solo work is showcased, which inherently may have dance moves with a greater degree of difficulty.
Dancers who are selected for the dance team to move on to audition for the Cirque Du Soleil must make attendance to all further rehearsal dates. Attendance will be mandatory! Only those who are willing to make this a high priority in the following month should sign up to audition for this event. For the month of October 2014, rehearsals will take place on the following days:
- Fridays at 6:30-8:30p.m. at St. John's Church, located at 1385 Warden Avenue
- Sundays at 2:00-5:00p.m. at St. Demetrios Polymenakion Cultural Centre, located at 30 Thorncliffe Park Drive
The audition date from the Cirque Du Soleil will be confirmed shortly. Their choreographers are expected to come to Toronto sometime in between October 27th to November 2nd, 2014.
