Department of Women's Issues

The Greek Community of Toronto (GCT) established the Department of Women's Issues on January 1, 1994. Shortly thereafter, the Executive Council and Board of Directors of the GCT approved the departments objectives.Within the first three months, over 40 members were involved in eight committees that dealt with, among other matters, the more pressing issues concerning safety, day care, health care, training and education.
True to its purpose, the department has over the years successfully organized several events, seminars and workshops on various topics concerning women. Topics have included: wife assault, coping with stress and depression, cancer and other health-related topics, to name but a few.
In all cases, the Greek community at large has received these events very well with recorded audiences in the hundreds. Finally, it continues to act as a liaison between women seeking services for a variety of needs and the institutions that provide them.

A noted accomplishment of the department was the successful completion of a Report on the Hellenic Womens Issues and Concerns Survey, 1995 which was funded in part, by the Ontario Womens Directorate. This survey provides, for the first time, the only formal means for Hellenic women in the greater Toronto area to express their concerns in all five of the priority areas noted above. It encouraged their involvement and established a profile of Hellenic women and their position regarding these priority issues.
Findings from the survey will benefit young and elderly women, women living in poverty, immigrant women and those with special needs, as well as the appropriate organizations who service women, such as the GCT, educational bodies, health care and social services providers and various government agencies. |

In 2009 the Greek Community of Toronto celebrates 100 years of service to the community, and in the same year its Women's Issues department celebrates 15 years since its establishment. In commemoration of both anniversaries, our department is planning to publish a book of its past events, the back of which will include what we've coined our 'Pink Section'. |
