    Department of Social Services

The Greek Community of Toronto Department of Social Services started out as a Social Services Centre in 1977 by a group of Greek Canadian social activists. Shortly following its establishment the Centre was integrated into the GCT as a department. Its first office, a store-front walk-in, was located at 756 Pape Avenue, where three staff and a handful of volunteers served 21 clients in the first month of its operation. Today, the department employs eight full-time and one part-time staff person. The departments daily functions are managed by an Executive Director who reports to an administrative council, known as the Social Services Board. The Social Services Board oversees the departments affairs, including policy and program development. The members of the board are volunteers and are appointed by the Board of Directors of the Community. The board meets six (6) times a year.

Four “moves” and three decades later, the department today provides a variety of social programs and services to assist people of Hellenic decent and members of other origins. The ethnic, linguistic and cultural specific services provided by the department are organized into five units that offer clients the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and cultural integration needed to become fulfilled individuals, resulting in a balance between country of origin and country of residence.

Home Support Program provides home support services to persons who are homebound and in need of special assistance. Our social workers also make arrangements for visiting home-makers, visiting nurses, Wheel Trans and programs for mentally/physically challenged individuals. In addition, they assist in completing Canadian and/or foreign pension applications, other social benefits applications, interpretation of documents and letters from government offices.

Adults & Seniors Day Program provides a variety of activities that are culturally, socially, cognitively and emotionally stimulating thus helping to enhance the quality of our client’s lives. The program is run out of St. Irene’s hall from Monday-Friday between 1pm-4pm and out of Greenwood Towers every Monday 1pm-4pm.

Community Support Services offers individual/family counselling and assists clients with completing and forwarding application forms and communicating with government and other related agencies with respect to citizenship, immigration, sponsorship, social benefits, pension, disability, social housing etc.

Translation and Interpretation Services provides professional and quality translation and interpretation service to individuals and companies. Our staff has extensive experience in confidential interpretation and translating documents such as manuals, technical reports, correspondence, contracts, certificates, medical reports etc.

Community Outreach Program offers education and information sessions/presentations to a variety of social service partners and other agencies such as Toronto Housing community sites, hospitals and nursing homes.
