St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1981 during the
presidency of the late Dr. Leonidas Polymenakos. Located on Warden, south
of Ellesmere, it is ideally located in the heart of Scarborough, easily
servicing area residents. Unfortunately, in January 1991, a fire completely
destroyed the Church. The fire and destruction of the Church did however
have very positive results. “Ouden kakon ameigeV kalou” means “In every
bad happening, there is something good.” It showed the strength of our
community as everyone rallied behind the Church and the Greek Community
to have the Church rebuilt. Services were conducted in the Youth Centre
gymnasium while the Church rebuilding continued until December of the
same year. A group of ten Orthodox Russian iconographers were responsible
for the iconography and the final result was a magnificent Church. Decorating
and servicing our city, we are thankful to God for it is one of the most
attended Greek Orthodox Churches in all of North America.
The building itself houses:
- The Youth Centre “Megas Alexandros”
- The offices for the Church
- Offices for the Greek Community Social Services
- Offices for Olympic Flame Soccer club
- A multi purpose room, and
- The Church
The Church has two main entrances, an elevator and a seating capacity of
450. During large feast days, the Church has been able to accommodate an
additional 400 people. The multi-purpose room is available for community
events. For more information and reservations, please contact the St. John's
office at 416-759-9259.
The Church executive council is comprised of the President, vice-president,
Secretary, Treasury and the parish Priest. The remaining body of the Church
council encompasses the many volunteers that attend services on a regular
basis. The President represents the Church council at the Greek Community’s
General and Executive meetings and together with the entire council strengthen
their weekly programs.
Since 1981, there have been many volunteers elected to the challenging position
of Church president. The Community thanks them, and their councils for their
work and the strong foundations they have created. The past presidents that
have served at St. John’s the Baptist Church are as follows:
| John Antonopoulos |
1981 - 1983 and 1988 - 1989 |
| Demetrios Lytras |
1984 - 1985 |
| George Glarentzos |
1986 - 1987 |
| Tassos Michalopoulos |
1992 - 1993 |
| Kostas Mavridis |
1994 - 1997 and 2000-2001 |
| Kostas Kanellos |
1998 - 1999 |
| Paul Botteas |
1990 - 1991 and 2002-Present |

The services of the Church are in accordance to the Greek Orthodox calendar.
Services are conducted every Sunday and on special feast days designated
by the Church. Baptisms, weddings and funerals are regular Church mysteries
performed throughout the year. Sunday School religious education is offered
to students between the ages 4 to 20. St. John’s also has a large youth
following which continues to grow in numbers weekly.
The Church also has a Philoptochos Ladies Association. They consist of women
from the congregation, which volunteer their time for regular activities.
They provide food and beverage services to the parishioners and assist in
various Community events. Their goal is to raise money for the poor and
needy of our city, regardless of ethnicity or religion and to also financially
support the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Canada.
The Olympic Flame Soccer club is located in the adjoining building of St.
John the Baptism. To find out more, select Alexander
the Great Athletics Department.
The Cultural Department of the Greek Community also provides a variety of
traditional Greek dance lessons for students between the ages of 6 to 25.
Classes operate throughout the entire week and are open to all individuals.
For more information, please visit the Cultural
Department.

The first priest of the Church was the newly ordained father Philippos P.A.
Philippou. Born in Cyprus, Father Philippou is a graduate of the Philosophical
School of the University of Athens, Greece, with a Masters in Library and
Information Science. At the University of Western Ontario, he obtained a
Bachelors degree in Education. His extensive educational background has
allowed him to teach the Greek language and literature in the elementary,
secondary and university levels.
An active community participant, Father Philippou has been writing sermons
and other religious articles for the weekly Greek newspaper “Chronicles”
for ten year. Since 1999, Father Philippou has been teaching Greek language
classes at the Greek Orthodox Theological Academy of Toronto. A respected
member of the community, Father Philippou continues to proudly serve the
Church and the community at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church
community.
