St. Irene Chrisovalantou Church is located in the heart of Toronto’s Greek Town, at 66 Gough Avenue, just north of Danforth Avenue. Servicing area residents for for over 25 years, it truly is one of our community’s beautiful accomplishments. The Church of St. Irene Chrisovalantou began as a vision from local residents. Together with a local monk from Greece, Demetrios Tsevlikos, they set out to build their dream. Monk Tsevlikos became ordained under the Russian Archdiocese of Canada with the new name Dorotheos. Father Dorotheos was born in Pireas but had a background from Corfu, Kerkira.

The Church officially began to operate in 1974, from a temporary location in the St. Clair and Victoria Park area. The first priests to conduct services were Father Dorotheos and Father Chris Chronopoulos (who was with the Church for a brief period of time. In June, 1975 the Church began operating from its new, permanent home. They transfored an old auto-body repair shop into a spendorous yet humble church. 1986 was another benchmark date in the Church’s history as it officially came under the umbrella of the Greek Community of Toronto in March of that year, during the presidency of Mr. Milopoulos.

Today St. Irene’s is a thriving parish under the tutellage of Father Peter Koumarianos. The GCMT has a mandate to further develop the church by erecting a domed roof, in line with traditional Orthodox architecture. Donations are continuously being received for this specific project. If you would like to make a donation, feel free to contact the GCMT offices or visit the Church.

The Church executive council is comprised of the President, vice-president, Secretary, Treasury, the parish Priest. The remaining body of the Church council encompasses the many volunteers that attend services on a regular basis. The President represents the Church council at the Greek Community’s General and Executive meetings and together with the entire council strengthen their weekly programs.

Since 1975, there have been many volunteers that have been elected to the difficult position of Church president. The Community thanks them, and their councils for their work and the strong foundations they have created. The past presidents that have served at St. Irene’s Church are as follows:
    Apostolos Kannis
    Giouros Ginargiros
    Liouros Boloninos

The services of the Church are in accordance to the Greek Orthodox calendar. Services are conducted every Sunday and on special feast days designated by the Church. Baptisms, weddings and funerals are regular Church mysteries performed throughout the year. Sunday School religious education is offered to students between the ages 4 to 20. The Church also has a Philoptochos Ladies Association. They consist of women from the congregation which volunteer their time for regular activities. They provide food and beverage services to the parishioners, and assist in various Community events. Their goal is to raise money for the poor and needy of our city, regardless of ethnicity or religion, and to also financially support the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Canada. The Cultural Department operates two programs from the St. Irene building. There are regular dance classes, and choir classes for students between the ages of 6 and 16. For more details, please go to the Cultural Deparment.
