Toronto’s Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, and the attached Polymenakion Cultural Centre, were built in 1962. The Cultural centre provides head offices for GCMT, an office for the priest and the church administrators, classrooms for Sunday school students and multipurpose workshops for extra-curricular, cultural and religious activities. Attached to the front of the building is the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Ideally located at 30 Thorncliffe Park Drive, the church is within close proximity to the Don Valley Parkway, easily servicing parishioners from Toronto’s downtown core and across the greater Toronto area. The church has a capacity for over 675 seated worshipers and ample parking facilities. The iconography of the church was completed by Mr. G. Papastamatiou in 1975, and was sponsored mostly by private donors of our community. In addition to the masterful Byzantine style icons, another area of attention are the iconostasis which are a skilled hand-craft.

When services are conducted every Sunday, parishioners are welcomed by the hymns of our church by our chanters. The present chanters of St. Demetrios consist of John Prasoulis and Andreas Hadjiyiannis who together with the renown Byzantine orchestra Orpheas, have been servicing our church for over 30 years.

The Community has had the honour of having the following respected priests service our church:
Fr. Constantinos Glouftis 1967-1979
Fr. Panayiotis Karathanasis 1967-1969
Fr. Vasilios Roumanas 1970-1976
Fr. Apostolos Ananiadis 1977-1990
Very Reverend Fr. Peter Karras 1979-1998
Fr. Charalambos Elles 1998-2004
Fr. Triantafillos Porfyris 2004-Present
The Very Rev. Father Peter Karras was recently appointed the Bishop of Africa. Father Apostolos Ananiadis went on to serve Toronto’s parishioners at the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. He currently serves at the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church.

The St. Demetrios janitor during the last 20 years, and a well known member of our community has been Mrs. Chrisanthi Frydas. Her service to the church and our community is duly recognized and appreciated. Her dedication is applauded as she serves as an example to our community.

The Church executive council is comprised of the President, vice-president, Secretary, Treasury and the parish Priest. The remaining body of the Church council encompasses the many volunteers that attend services regularly. The President represents the Church council at the Greek Community’s General and Executive meetings and together with the entire council, strengthen their weekly programs.

The services of the Church are in accordance to the Greek Orthodox calendar. Services are conducted every Sunday and on special feast days designated by the Church. Baptisms, weddings and funerals are regular Church mysteries performed throughout the year. The Sunday School religious education program is offered to students between the ages 4 to 20. St. Demetrios is also fortunate to have a growing following of youth who also attend services regularly.

Finally, in addition to the many weekly volunteers, the Church also has a Philoptochos Ladies Association. They consist of women from the congregation which volunteer their time for regular activities. They provide food and beverage services to the parishioners, and assist in various Community events. Their goal is to raise money for the poor and needy of our city, regardless of ethnicity or religion, while also providing financial support to the church itself and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Canada.

The entire church council is proud of its accomplishments over the years and together with everyone’s participation look forward to servicing the church and the community. Take the time to come and worship at the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
